Asa’s religious reforms
1 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Obed,
2 And he went out to meet Asa, and said to him, Hear me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin: The LORD will be with you, if you are with him; and if you seek him, he will be found of you; but if you forsake him, he will forsake you also.
3 Many days Israel has been without a true God and without a priest to teach, and without law;
4 But when in their trouble they turned to the LORD God of Israel, and sought him, he was found of them ..
5 In those times there was no peace, neither for him that went in nor for him that came out, but many afflictions upon all the inhabitants of the lands.
6 And one people destroyed another, and one city another city; for God troubled them with all kinds of calamities.
7 But be ye strong, and let not your hands be weak, for there is a reward for your work.
8 When Asa heard the words and the prophecy of the prophet Azariah the son of Obed, he took courage, and took away the abominable idols out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and out of the cities which he had taken in the hill country of Ephraim, and repaired the altar of the LORD that was before the porch of the LORD.
9 Then he gathered together all Judah and Benjamin, and with them the strangers of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon; for many of Israel had gone over to him, seeing that the LORD his God was with him.
10 So they assembled at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa.
11 And the same day they sacrificed to the LORD, of the spoil which they had brought, seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep..
12 Then they solemnly promised to seek the LORD God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul;
13 And that whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should die, whether small or great, male or female.
14 And they swore unto the LORD with a loud voice and with shouting, with the sound of trumpets and horns.
15 All Judah rejoiced at this oath; for they swore with all their heart, and with all their will they sought it, and it was found of them; and the LORD gave them peace on every side.
16 And even Maachah, the mother of king Asa, he himself deposed her from her dignity, because she had made an image of Asherah; and Asa destroyed the image, and brake it in pieces, and burned it at the brook Kidron.
17 With all this, the high places were not taken away from Israel, though Asa’s heart was perfect in all his days..
18 And he brought into the house of God that which his father had dedicated, and that which he had consecrated, silver, and gold, and vessels.
19 And there was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa’s reign.
Explanation and meaning of 2 Chronicles 15
2 Chronicles 15 is the 15th chapter of the second book of Chronicles that you can find in the Old Testament of the Bible. This important book comes after its namesake 1 Chronicles, with which it formed a single book in antiquity.
In fact, the events narrated in both books are chronologically contiguous, so that there is no discontinuity between the first book and the second. They were probably divided to shorten the length of the texts, which at that time were written in scrolls and not in the books we know today.
The content you can find in the Books of Chronicles is the history of Judaism from Genesis with Adam and Eve to the capture of the kingdom of Judah by the Babylonian empire, although all this in a more schematic way and more as a historical account.
Most of the things you find in 1 and 2 Chronicles serve to give context to all the previous books of the Old Testament. For example, it appears in the genealogy from Adam to David; thus being able to understand the link between the two and follow the thread of events.
Today’s chapter, 2 Chronicles 15, deals with a part of the reign of Asa in Judah. This occurred around 900 B.C., being the fifth king after David. At that time, Judah and Israel were divided and many conflicts beset the Jewish people, although we will see all this in the analysis of the chapter.
Who wrote 2 Chronicles
There is very little information about the Books of Chronicles of the Bible, in fact even the historical period to which they belong is not precisely known. Thus, it is even less possible to determine the author or authors who conceived this work.
One of the most widely accepted hypotheses is that both books were initially written by Ezra. Ezra, a leader of the Jewish people after the Babylonian captivity and who enjoys a book of his own in the Old Testament titled with his name.
This hypothesis is possible because the style of writing in Chronicles is very similar to that of the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, placing them chronologically in the same period and probably written by the same author.
Bible study of 2 Chronicles 15
Now let’s take a closer look at chapter 2 Chronicles 15 thus culminating this article and learning what the Lord has to say to us in this text.
This fragment narrates the religious reforms king Asa did in the kingdom of Judah. At that time, many of the inhabitants of Israel had turned away from God and were worshiping false idols and filling their lives with materialism, vices and envy.
This was so to the point that King Asa’s own mother was removed from her position as queen mother for possessing and worshiping a pagan idol as you can read in 2 Chronicles 15:16. Asa’s mission was to restore the faith of his fellow citizens, and to do so he had to restore their hope for a better time.
The key to the chapter is found in the following verses 2 Chronicles 15:2-4 In which Asa tells us that if we look for God we will find Him. This is also a very valid message for our time, and one that non-believers should also be aware of.
“And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin, The LORD will be with you, if ye be with him: and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you also.” (2 Chronicles 15:2)
It is known that many people do not believe in God because they say that He does nothing for them. However, it is when you seek God when you realize how much the Lord has done and does for us, and how much we must love Him to try to give Him back one iota of what He gives us.
Faith requires a little effort of one’s own It is not the easy way. Even so, the rewards of living close to God are infinite and nothing on Earth can match them in any way.
The verse 2 Chronicles 15:13 must be interpreted in the correct way, which is not the literal form of the text. The biblical texts were written many years ago, and the customs of the time were somewhat less tolerant. We leave you here, the verse:
“And that whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should die, whether great or small, male or female.” (2 Chronicles 15:13)
What is really meant is not that all non-believers will die, but that all those who firmly believe with their hearts will live eternally. God gives us salvation and allows us to come to his side in eternal life after the death of the body.
