Psalm 5 of the Bible in English and large print
We continue with the written text of Psalm 5, in King James version of the Bible. This text is going to be our reference for further analysis so, when you want to look something up, you know where to find it. Here we go!
1 Hear my words, O LORD;
Consider my moaning.
2 Be attentive to the voice of my cry, my King and my God,
For I will pray to you.
3 O Jehovah, in the morning you will hear my voice;
Tomorrow I will appear before you, and I will wait.
4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
The evil one will not dwell with you.
5 The foolish shall not stand before your eyes;
Thou abhorrest all workers of iniquity.
6 You will destroy those who speak lies;
The LORD will abhor the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
7 But because of the abundance of thy lovingkindness I will come into thy house;
I will worship toward your holy temple in your fear.
8 Guide me, O LORD, in your righteousness, because of my enemies;
Make your path straight before me.
9 For there is no sincerity in their mouth;
Its entrails are evil,
Open sepulcher is its throat,
With their tongue they speak flattery.
10 Punish them, O God;
Fall for their own advice;
For the multitude of their transgressions cast them out,
Because they rebelled against you.
11 But let all those who trust in you rejoice;
Shout for joy forever, because you defend them;
In you let those who love your name rejoice.
12 For you, O LORD, will bless the righteous;
As with a shield you will surround it with your favor.
Meaning of Psalm 5 verse by verse
Now that you know its context, it is time to know Psalm 5 in more depth. Let’s get started!
- Verses 1-3
In the first three verses of Psalm 5, David addresses the Lord and asks for his attention. It is important to direct our prayers to God as we must be aware of the importance of our words and not pray for worldly things.
These three verses give the text a special aura, since from the very first moment we know that what is going to be said transcends any ephemeral concern. The connotation of morning prayer is seen especially in the third verse:
3 O Jehovah, in the morning you will hear my voice;
Tomorrow I will appear before you, and I will wait.
- Verses 4-6
David makes it clear that our God is not an evil God, and that there is no place in his people for evil. All Christians know that the main driving force of our faith is love and solidarity with our environment, always trying to create a better world.
Therefore, all those who stray from the way of the Lord will do evil and for their own benefit, even if it harms others. Verse 4 makes this very clear:
4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
The evil one will not dwell with you.
- Verses 7-8
From here until the end of the psalm, the characteristics of righteous and sinners alternate, the former being those who act according to the Word of God.
Verse 8 exemplifies very well what we have just said, although we must keep in mind that it is situated in the context of conflict in which David found himself:
8 Guide me, O LORD, in your righteousness, because of my enemies;
Make your path straight before me.
As we can see, the way of truth is the way of God, and it is He who guides us through the Holy Scriptures. Apart from all this, there is no true happiness.
- Verses 9-10
In these two verses the author speaks again of the wicked, with a very forceful tone. The definition of sinners he uses is somewhat metaphorical and can be adapted to our times. Sinners are those who live by deceiving others in order to profit and can only tell lies. David seeks punishment for these people who turn away from the Kingdom of God.
Here is a good example of what is explained in these verses:
10 Punish them, O God;
Fall for their own advice;
For the multitude of their transgressions cast them out,
Because they rebelled against you.
- Verses 11-12
Finally, we find a hopeful message, which will encourage us to start a new day. The verse that best conveys this message is verse 11, which we leave you with below.
11 But let all those who trust in you rejoice;
Shout for joy forever, because you defend them;
In you let those who love your name rejoice.
Start your days with this verse in mind and you will have God’s protection at all times. Try to look for the good things in all your actions and look for small moments to pray to the Lord and thank Him for all that He gives us.
