All Christians know and have heard on countless occasions that God is love and that he loves us eternally, although you may never have stopped to think about the importance of these words.

Meaning of Jeremiah chapter 31 verse 3

Now it is time to analyze Jeremiah 31:3 in detail and discover the wonderful message hidden behind its words.

In the darkest and harshest of times, the Lord sends a message of love to the captives. But it’s a different message, transcendental unequaled by any human feeling or will.

The Lord tells you that He has always loved you and will always love you: his love is eternal. And although at that time this message was addressed to them, today it extends to all mankind because there is no more, God is love.

Although sometimes things do not work out as we think they should, we must remember that everything will get better if we stay close to God. He loves us and we must be able to receive His love.

How is it possible to do this? Loving our brothers and sisters, praying frequently and studying the Holy Scriptures. If your life is based on this, you have no doubt that God’s love will be in you and all will be well.

The word eternity should not be pronounced in vain. Something eternal is something that is over time something perpetual, immovable. The Lord loved you before you were born and He will love you when your life on Earth is over, He knows everything He has in store for you and you just have to discover it.

Mercy is the other key word in this verse. Thanks to his infinite love, the Lord will be merciful to you when you fail, and he will allow you to get back on the right path if you are really looking for it.

Do not be afraid to err because, like everyone else, you are a human being. Making mistakes is part of our lives and we must learn to live with it. The most important thing is to know recognize our mistakes with humility and show them to God so that he may forgive us.

Jeremiah’s letter to the captives

1 At that time, says the LORD, I will be God to all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.

2 Thus saith the LORD, The people that escaped the sword found grace in the wilderness, when Israel went in search of rest.

3 The LORD manifested himself to me long ago, saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have prolonged my lovingkindness to you.

4 I will yet build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt yet be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth with joyful dances.

5 You shall yet plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; those who plant shall plant and enjoy them.

6 For there shall be a day when the watchmen in mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise, and let us go up to Zion unto the LORD our God.

7 For thus saith the LORD; Rejoice in Jacob with joy, and shout for joy at the head of the nations: make a noise, give thanks, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.

8 Behold, I will bring them back from the land of the north, and gather them from the ends of the earth, and among them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together; they shall come hither again in great company.

9 They shall go with weeping, but with lovingkindness will I bring them again, and cause them to walk by the rivers of water, in a straight way wherein they shall not stumble: for I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

10 Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the coastlands afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.

11 For the LORD redeemed Jacob, he redeemed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.

12 And they shall come with shouts of joy on high in Zion, and shall run to the goodness of the LORD, to the bread, and to the wine, and to the oil, and to the cattle of the flock and of the herd; and their soul shall be as a watered garden, and they shall have no more sorrow.

13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, the young and the old together; and I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them glad in their sorrow.

14 And I will satisfy the soul of the priest with abundance, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD.

15 Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and bitter mourning; Rachel mourning for her children, and would not be comforted for her children, because they are perished.

16 Thus saith the LORD: Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for there is hire for thy labor, saith the LORD, and they shall return out of the land of the enemy.

17 There is hope also for your future, says the LORD, and the children shall return to their own land.

18 I heard Ephraim mourning and lamenting, “You scourged me, and I was punished like an untamed bullock; turn me, and I shall be turned, for you are the LORD my God.

19 For after I had turned away I repented, and after I had acknowledged my fault, I smote my thigh; I was ashamed and confounded, because I bore the reproach of my youth.

20 Is not Ephraim a precious son to me? Is it not a child in whom I delight? because since I talked about him, I have been constantly reminded of him. Therefore my bowels are moved for him; surely I will have mercy on him, saith the LORD.

21 Set thee up signs, set thee up high cairns, mark diligently the highway; turn thee by the way by which thou wentest, O virgin of Israel, return to these thy cities.

22 How long will you wander, O stubborn daughter? For the LORD will create a new thing upon the earth: the woman shall compass the man.

23 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; They shall yet speak this word in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captives: The LORD bless thee, O habitation of righteousness, O holy mountain.

24 And Judah shall dwell there, and in all the cities thereof shall dwell husbandmen, and they that go with flocks.

25 For I will satisfy the weary soul, and I will satisfy every sorrowful soul.

26 At this I awoke, and saw, and my sleep was pleasant to me.

The new covenant

27 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and with the seed of beast.

28 And as I have been careful for them to pluck up and to break down, and to overthrow and to destroy and to destroy and to afflict, so will I be careful for them to build and to plant, says the LORD.

29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge,

30 But every man shall die in his own iniquity: every man’s teeth that eateth the sour grapes shall be set on edge.

31 Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

32 Not like the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took their hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; for they have broken my covenant, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD.

33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the LORD; I will put my law in their mind, and write it in their heart; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34 And no man shall teach his neighbor any more, nor any man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.

35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for light by night, which divideth the sea, and the waves thereof roar: the LORD of hosts is his name:

36 If these laws fail before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall fail, so that they shall not be a nation before me for ever.

37 Thus saith the LORD; If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out below, then will I also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.

38 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built unto the LORD, from the tower of Hananeel unto the corner gate.

39 And the line of measure shall go out beyond before him over the hill of Gareb, and he shall compass Goa.

40 And all the valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the plains unto the brook Kidron, even unto the corner of the horse gate eastward, shall be holy unto the LORD: it shall not be plucked up nor destroyed any more for ever.

Context of Jeremiah 31:3

Context is one of the most important things when it comes to understanding a text of any kind, be it historical, literary or, especially biblical.

In the Bible there are numerous references to historical events that occurred during or prior to the writing of the Bible, so knowing about them will give you a complete vision of the text of the text and a help when interpreting its concepts.

In this case, you should know that Jeremiah was a very relevant prophet that lived in Jerusalem 500 years before Jesus Christ during what is known as the destruction of the first temple.

At that time, the region was divided into two kingdoms, Israel and Judah, and it was the latter that was defeated by the Babylonian army, leading to the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of numerous Jews to Babylon.

Jeremiah had already prophesied this disaster in the face of the bad habits of his people who were turning away from God day after day. Even so, after the fall, the Lord sent messages of hope to the captives through the prophet, so that they would build faith again, this time in a more solid way.

Jeremiah 31 is a letter of this period, which aims to instill confidence in the exiles to renew their faith. So, this text can also be useful to you, whenever you find yourself far from God to regain faith and the desire to move forward at his side.

This is all we wanted to show you about the verse Jeremiah 31:3 and the love of God. With this tenderness that invades us when we feel God by our side, we say goodbye for today and thank you for reading our articles.

See you next time!
