Luke 10:18 with explanation and meaning

With all this, we can now turn to the biblical commentary on Luke 10:18 with total tranquility because we only need to explain a few things concerning the figure of Satan.

In the Bible, Satan is the incarnation of evil in the world, a being who is against God and tries to deceive humans so that we do not follow Our Lord, although he has already been defeated on numerous occasions.

In the Gospels, Jesus has several encounters with Satan, in the well-known temptations in the desert precisely during the journey to Jerusalem that we told you about in the previous section.

Satan is presented as the temptation, something to be avoided at all costs and to remain steadfast in the faith. The Word of God is a shield against him, and all Christians are well protected if we keep our love for the Lord alive.

Luke 10:18 speaks of a fall of Satan from the sky. There are four occasions in the Bible in which Satan falls, and we will now give you a summary of them.

On the first occasion, Satan fell from a glorified being to a profane being. This is the fall of which Jesus speaks on this occasion. According to Christian tradition, the devil was an angel servant of God who revealed himself and was expelled and condemned forever.

The second fall is the condemnation of not having access to heaven, Thus becoming a being that only affects mortals and the sky is the only place safe from him. Thus, eternal life is a life full of happiness with God.

The last two falls are narrated in the Apocalypse, and it is the final victory of God. God’s final victory against Satan, first confining him to the abyss and then condemning him to the pit of eternal fire.

Thus, during the gospel that concerns us, the situation was after the first fall, with Satan still somewhat powerful on Earth, trying to deceive as many humans as he could. Also dared with Jesus.

However, as you can see only the presence of God in our lives already reduces Satan’s influence and the Word of God is the best weapon against him. In addition, Satan falls like lightning before God, this is very fast and dramatically.

In conclusion, Satan is the evil in the world, the temptation in person; and the only way to overcome him is through the Word of God, following the way of truth with a deep love for the Lord. Only in this way does Satan fall and, moreover, he falls very quickly.

Luke 10:18 in English and large print

If you want to read the text calmly we leave you here below Luke 10 in its entirety The text of Luke 10, although as you may have heard, the part most related to today’s verse is the surrounding part, so if you want you can focus only on that part.

The following text can be found in the kjv Bible, which is undoubtedly a very faithful translation of the original Bible, although its language is sometimes a little outdated.

Mission of the seventies

1 After these things the Lord also appointed seventy others, whom he sent two and two before him into every city and place where he was to go.

2 And he said to them, “The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

3 Go your way; behold, I send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves.

4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes; and salute no man by the way.

5 In whatever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house.

6 And if there be any son of peace there, your peace shall rest upon him; and if not, he shall return to you.

7 And lodge in the same house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.

8 In whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat whatever is set before you;

9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, when ye go out into the streets thereof, say:

11 Even the dust of your city, which has clung to our feet, we shake off against you. But this know, that the kingdom of God has come near to you.

12 And I say unto you, that in that day the punishment of Sodom shall be more tolerable than the punishment of that city.

Ayes on impenitent cities

13 Woe to you, Corazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! for if the miracles had been done in Tyre and Sidon that have been done in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14 Therefore, in the judgment the punishment will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

15 And you, Capernaum, who are lifted up to the heavens, you shall be brought down to Hades.

16 He who hears you hears me; and he who rejects you rejects me; and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.

Return of the seventies

17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name.

18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

19 Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

20 But do not rejoice that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

Jesus rejoices

21 In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit, and said, I praise thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Yes, Father, because it pleased you.

22 All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

23 And turning to the disciples, he said to them apart, Blessed are the eyes that see what you see;

24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

The Good Samaritan

25 And behold, an interpreter of the law stood up and said, to test him, Master, by doing what shall I inherit eternal life?

26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read?

27 And he answered and said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.

28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

29 But he, wishing to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?

30 And Jesus answered and said, A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31 And it came to pass, when a priest came down that way, and saw him, he passed by.

32 Likewise a Levite came near that place, and seeing him, he passed by.

33 But a Samaritan, as he was on his way, came near him, and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion;

34 And he came near and bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast and brought him to the inn and took care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the innkeeper, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, I will repay thee when I come again.

36 Who, then, of these three do you think was the neighbor of the one who fell into the hands of the robbers?

37 He said: He that showed mercy on him. Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.

Jesus visits Martha and Mary

38 And it came to pass, as he went on his way, he entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to his word.

40 But Martha was preoccupied with many chores, and she came up and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell him to help me.

41 Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are troubled and troubled about many things.

42 But only one thing is necessary; and Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.

Context of Luke 10:18

Before we look at what the verse means, we suggest you understand a little of its context, both in the Bible and in the general history of the life of Jesus.

With the usual nomenclature, this verse is Luke chapter 10 verse 8It belongs then to the Gospel according to Luke and more specifically to what we would call the second part of the Gospel.

This is the part of the Gospel in which most of what we know of Jesus’ life takes place and deals with his journey through Israel to Jerusalem where he was tried and crucified by the Jewish powers.

Luke 10 is almost at the beginning of this journey, and Jesus decides to send seventy people ahead of him ahead of him to warn and bring the news of his arrival in Jerusalem to many towns and villages that he would not have time to visit.

He gave them the power to bring the kingdom of God closer to those peoples, even by healing the sick. Moreover, although he did not give them the power to remove demons, they managed to do so and we come here to the part that interests us.

The power of the Lord is so strong that no demon can resist him.

In order for you to better understand this part of the Gospel of Luke, below you will find a video that explains it all very well. It is not necessary to understand the verse, but it is a good way to get an overall idea!
